In October I was honoured to receive the 2019 Dream Practice Award at the Enlightened Business Conference in Las Vegas. It was very special because I was surrounded by my team, the people who have worked with me over the last year to make it possible.
How do you create your ideal business?
- Don’t settle for the status quo. Determine your vision for your business, set goals and then take action to move you and your business in that direction. “If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.” (Zig Ziglar) Reflect on why you went into business in the first place and re-energize that dream.
- Create a team, not just staff. As Jim Collins discusses in his book Good to Great, you need to have the right people on the bus. To create a team, you need everyone on the bus to want to go in the same direction and be willing to follow your lead.
- Invest in your people with internal mentoring and external training. There are some business owners who express reluctance to spend the money on training because they fear that the employee will leave. But I ask, “What if they stay?” There is no way you can achieve your dream business without your team’s support.
- Carefully consider who are your ideal customers. Once you know who you wish to serve, then you can focus your resources in areas of marketing and sales, hiring and training, products and services.
It is difficult to create your ideal business in isolation because it is hard to see what is possible with the daily demands of business. That is why it is important to take time from day to day activities to reflect on what you want your business to look like. Working with an advisor and coach gets you into a different mindset that allows you to see what is possible. I have been working with the coaches at Enlightened Business to fine tune my business model.
